Year 4 Foundation Course
Strong 11+ performance begins with strong basics.
In English, we develop comprehension technique, vocabulary and reading stamina. Pupils learn how to interpret unfamiliar words, locate evidence in a text and avoid common comprehension mistakes. These skills directly support both school attainment and future 11+ papers.
In maths, we strengthen arithmetic fluency, number sense and structured problem solving. Children practise working methodically and accurately, building confidence with multi step questions long before timing becomes critical.
When these foundations are secure, Year 5 becomes progression rather than repair.
One of the biggest shocks for families is discovering that large parts of the 11+ are not taught in school.
Verbal Reasoning and Non Verbal Reasoning include specific recurring question types that require technique, not guesswork.
In Year 4, we introduce these gradually. Pupils learn how patterns work, how logic is structured and how to apply clear methods to each style of question. There is no time pressure at this stage. The focus is understanding.
By the time formal preparation intensifies in Year 5, these question types feel familiar rather than intimidating.
Year 4 is the ideal time to build belief.
Children begin to see that difficult questions can be broken down. They experience small, consistent wins. They develop resilience when a problem does not work first time.
With a maximum of six pupils per group, we can support individual progress while maintaining the motivation of shared learning. Pupils are not compared or filtered. They are guided and developed.
The outcome is not just stronger academic skill, but a child who enters Year 5 ready to progress calmly and confidently.
