Welcome to A Star Tuition in Stratford-upon-Avon.

We have a highly successful and established tuition centre based in Rugby offering tuition for the Warwickshire 11+ GL examination, which is also sat in this area for entry to King Edward VI School, Stratford Girls’ Grammar School and Alcester Grammar School.

We are pleased to announce our arrival in Stratford-upon-Avon and look forward to sharing our expertise with students here.

We use traditional pencil and paper methods in our tuition classes as the 11 plus examination is a written paper. Our small group tuition aims to build confidence with fun, friendly classes that focus on individual needs. All of the skills needed for the examination in English, Maths, Verbal and Non -Verbal Reasoning are covered in our programme to help children feel confident with the 11plus papers.

Maths skills

  • Place value - mental arithmetic, rounding up and down, four main operations, multiply and divide by 10,100,1000
  • Worded maths problems and interpreting data
  • Factors and multiples, squared and cubed numbers
  • Fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Area, perimeter and volume
  • Ratio and proportion
  • Angles

English skills

  • Comprehension - understanding texts, find and underline key information, recognise and label main ideas of paragraphs.
  • Cloze passages - word bank, missing words and missing letters
  • Cross over with Verbal Reasoning skills.

Verbal Reasoning skills

  • Word types - alliteration, personification, metaphor / simile, acronyms, synonyms / antonyms / homonyms.
  • Spellings - plurals, homophones, prefixes / suffixes, compound words, awkward spellings.‍
  • Punctuation - commas, brackets, speech marks, apostrophes.

Non Verbal Reasoning

  • Finding patterns - size, shading, shapes, position, counting, rotations, reflections.
  • Nets and cubes
  • Use of props to help students understand and visualise NVR concepts
